Benefits of Nitrogen

Nitrogen is one of the most widely used industrial gases in metal processing and metallurgy, serving as the primary atmosphere control gas across heat treatment, surface hardening, powder metallurgy, and metal fabrication operations. Its inert properties make it essential wherever metal surfaces must be protected from oxidation, decarburisation, or surface contamination during high-temperature processing.

On-site PSA nitrogen generation has become the standard choice for metal processing facilities, replacing cylinder nitrogen and liquid nitrogen supply chains that introduce delivery dependency, logistics cost, and supply risk during critical production runs. A PSA nitrogen generator provides continuous, on-demand nitrogen at the exact purity and flow required by your furnace or treatment process – directly at the point of use.

How PSA Nitrogen Generators Enhance Safety and Quality in Metal Processing

In metalworking processes like heat treatment, sintering, and nitriding, nitrogen plays a vital role in preventing oxidation and ensuring uniform, repeatable results. Absstem’s PSA nitrogen generators deliver on-demand, high-purity nitrogen to safeguard equipment, extend furnace and tooling life, and produce superior metal components with consistent surface quality.

Every Absstem nGEN system includes IIoT remote monitoring* – purity, pressure, and flow are tracked continuously and transmitted to Absstem’s platform, enabling real-time verification of nitrogen quality without interrupting production. The 10-year Carbon Molecular Sieve warranty* and lowest air-to-nitrogen ratio in class reduce long-term operating cost for metal processing facilities running continuous shift operations.

Key Applications

Heat Treatment

Nitrogen creates a controlled, inert atmosphere inside heat treatment furnaces that prevents oxidation and decarburisation of metal surfaces during heating and cooling cycles. This ensures consistent hardness, durability, and surface finish across batch and continuous furnace operations. PSA nitrogen enables precise atmosphere control throughout the full heat treatment cycle – from heating ramp through soak to controlled cooling.

Nitriding

In gas nitriding, nitrogen is diffused into the metal surface at temperatures between 500–570°C, forming a hard nitride layer that significantly improves surface hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength without distortion. The process requires high-purity nitrogen (typically 99.5%+) delivered consistently to maintain the correct nitrogen potential in the furnace atmosphere. Absstem’s nGEN provides this continuously and reliably.

Bright Annealing

Bright annealing requires an ultra-high purity nitrogen atmosphere (typically 99.99–99.995%) to prevent any oxidation or scaling of metal surfaces during the annealing cycle, producing a bright, oxide-free, mill-finish surface ready for further processing without mechanical cleaning. This is the most purity-demanding nitrogen application in metal processing – and one where on-site PSA nitrogen quality directly determines product surface quality. Absstem’s nGEN is configured to deliver consistent 99.995% purity for bright annealing lines.

Sintering (Powder Metallurgy)

Nitrogen supports clean sintering of powdered metals by providing a controlled atmosphere that prevents oxidation and contamination of metal particles during the bonding process. It stabilises the sintering environment, ensuring precise and consistent bonding, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties in finished sintered components. Applications include PM parts for automotive, aerospace, and precision engineering.

Case Hardening & Carburising

Nitrogen is used as the carrier gas in carburising and carbonitriding processes, where carbon (and nitrogen in carbonitriding) is introduced into the metal surface to create a hard outer case with a tough, ductile core. Precise nitrogen purity and flow control are essential for consistent case depth and hardness profile. Absstem’s nGEN provides the stable, high-purity nitrogen carrier gas required for repeatable case hardening results.

Metal Powder Atomisation

In metal powder production by gas atomisation, high-purity nitrogen is used as the atomising gas to break molten metal streams into fine spherical powder particles. Nitrogen’s inertness prevents oxidation of the powder during atomisation and cooling, ensuring high-purity, consistently spherical powder for additive manufacturing (3D printing), powder metallurgy, and thermal spray applications. This is a high-volume, continuous nitrogen application ideally served by nGEN’s full-scale capability.

Challenges

Oxidation
Oxidation of Metals During Processing

High-temperature metal processing causes surface oxidation, degrading quality and mechanical properties. Continuous nitrogen atmosphere control prevents oxidation throughout the processing cycle.

Contamination Affecting Surface Finish

Trace oxygen or moisture causes discolouration, scaling, or decarburisation – critical for bright annealing and precision heat treatment. IIoT purity monitoring* verifies nitrogen quality in real time with instant alerts.

Food Safety
Precise Nitrogen Purity Requirements for Specialised Treatments

Different processes need different purity levels: 95–99% for general heat treatment, 99.5%+ for nitriding, 99.99–99.995% for bright annealing. nGEN configures purity precisely at commissioning and maintains it continuously.

Does Your Steel or Metal Plant Also Need Oxygen?

Steel and metal processing operations often require both nitrogen and oxygen – nitrogen for protective atmosphere heat treatment, bright annealing, nitriding, and sintering; oxygen for Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) enrichment, oxy-fuel cutting, combustion efficiency improvement, and scrap melting.

Absstem is one of the few Indian manufacturers that provides both on-site PSA nitrogen and on-site PSA oxygen generation, allowing steel and metal plants to consolidate their entire on-site gas supply under a single partner – one quality system, one IIoT monitoring* platform, one AMC through Absstem Shield.

FAQs – Nitrogen Generators for Metal Processing & Metallurgy

A PSA nitrogen generator produces high-purity nitrogen on-site from atmospheric air using Carbon Molecular Sieves. In metal processing and metallurgy, it provides a continuous supply of nitrogen for heat treatment, bright annealing, nitriding, and sintering – creating controlled, inert or reducing atmospheres that prevent oxidation, ensure consistent surface quality, and improve mechanical properties of treated metals.

Bright annealing requires nitrogen purity of 99.99% to 99.995% – the highest purity requirement in metal processing. Even trace oxygen levels cause surface oxidation and discolouration, negating the ‘bright’ oxide-free finish that the process is designed to achieve. Absstem’s nGEN is configured at commissioning to deliver consistent 99.995% purity, verified in real time through IIoT monitoring*.

Gas nitriding typically requires 99.5% to 99.9% nitrogen purity. The nitrogen must be consistently delivered at the correct purity and flow to maintain the required nitrogen potential in the furnace atmosphere, ensuring a uniform, well-controlled nitride layer depth and hardness profile.

nGEN is suited for large continuous furnace lines, bright annealing, and production operations above 100 Nm³/hr, or where purity requirements are 99.9%+. nGENX is suited for smaller heat treatment workshops, nitriding units, and fabrication shops needing up to 100 Nm³/hr with plug-and-play installation. Both include IIoT monitoring* and 10-year CMS warranty.

Yes. Absstem provides both on-site PSA nitrogen (nGEN) for heat treatment, annealing, and nitriding, and on-site PSA oxygen (Idos) for EAF furnace enrichment, oxy-fuel cutting, and combustion improvement. Steel and metal plants can consolidate both gas supply systems under a single Absstem installation, with one IIoT monitoring* platform and one AMC through Absstem Shield.

Sintering of powdered metals typically requires 99.5% to 99.9% nitrogen purity. The nitrogen atmosphere must remain consistently inert throughout the sintering cycle to prevent oxidation of metal particles during bonding, ensuring dimensional accuracy and consistent mechanical properties in finished sintered components.

Cylinder and liquid nitrogen typically costs ₹600/- to ₹1000/- (Cylinders) and ₹15/- to ₹25/- (LIN) per Nm³. On-site PSA generation costs ₹1.80/- (95%) to ₹10.60/- (99.9995%) per Nm³ (electricity only). For a continuous heat treatment furnace consuming 50 Nm³/hr on three shifts, this typically represents savings of ₹1.5–3 crore annually, with payback on the nGEN investment within 8–18 months.

Yes. Absstem’s nGENX is specifically designed for smaller heat treatment workshops, nitriding units, and metal fabrication facilities needing up to 100 Nm³/hr with fast, plug-and-play installation. It includes the same IIoT monitoring and 10-year CMS warranty as the full-scale nGEN, at a lower entry investment.

Metal powder atomisation is a process where molten metal is broken into fine spherical powder particles using a high-pressure gas jet. Nitrogen is used as the atomising gas because its inertness prevents oxidation of the powder during atomisation and cooling – producing high-purity, consistently spherical metal powder for additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, and thermal spray. This is a high-volume continuous application requiring nGEN’s full-scale flow capability.
